AMERICA TROPICAL FROM SIQUIEROS
In 1932 the Mexican muralist David Alfaro Siquieros was commissioned
to paint a mural depicting the folkloric theme of “Tropical
America” on a wall in Olvera Street, Los Angeles, California.
Instead of painting an idyllic scene of Latinos slumbering in
the sun, Siquieros used the opportunity to paint a scathing
indictment against U.S. imperialism in Latin America. Now the
1971 documentary written and produced by Jesús Treviño
which chronicles the painting of the mural and it’s whitewashing
is available from The Cinema Guild.

WHAT
PEOPLE ARE SAYING ABOUT THE FABULOUS SINKHOLE
"Treviño is as talented a writer as he is a director.
His work is both visionary and chilling. The stories literally
crawl into your mind and squirm around inside. You won't be
able to forget them."
John Carpenter, writer/director of The Thing, Halloween,
They Live, and The Fog
"A
riveting and courageous testimony that rekindles the spirit
of the Chicano urban movement bringing to life the total commitment
, excitement, sacrifice and unquenchable energy that built the
movement. His unique, honest, uncompromising story shines a
light of understandingon the Chicano life experience, the poverty,
inferiority, police brutality, institutionalized discrimination
and betrayal."
Dolores Huerta, former Vice-President of the United Farm Workers
Union
"An hour long "docu-comedy" starring the popular
L.A.-based Chicano performance troupe Culture Clash...the video
shifts between metaphysical slapstick and probing interviews
with historians, anthropologists, community activists and union
leaders, the documentary makes a credible case for Aztlán's
historic reality while adding a suitably postmodern, pop-culture
spin."
THE SKYSCRAPER THAT FLEW takes off where THE
FABULOUS SINKHOLE left off and involves the adventures of Choo
Choo Torres, Yoli Mendoza, Mrs. Romero and all the madcap characters
who reside in Arroyo Grande, an ordinary town where unusual things often happen."
"The characters without exception are compassionately drawn and memorable...this book is for anyone who enjoys imaginative tales with a positive and humorous outlook on the human condition." The Tennessean
"The characters in these loosely linked tales, cause a visitor to exclaim, "It reminds me of tutti frutti ice cream!" All those tastes, she goes on to explain, leave you feeling so good inside. Just so, these stories." The Bloomsbury Review
